Kathy Gemperle
My art explores the interplay of memory, place, and imagination: how living spaces come to embody specific emotion; how experience can influence the physical senses; and how present realities reshape our interpretations of the past.
I am a Chicago-based painter and ceramic artist. I was an art teacher in Chicago schools for 33 years and have been an instructor of ceramic arts at Robert Crown Community Center since 1975. Long fascinated with Chicago history, I was founding President of the Edgewater Historical Society where I still curate annual exhibits. I studied art at Mundelein College and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. I continued my education at UIC and Northeastern and the School of the Art institute before earning a BA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Columbia College, Chicago. Because of that experience I have produced a book of poetry entitled “Remembered Space”. I have participated in many exhibits over the years including the Andersonville Art Fair where I was awarded Honorable Mention in painting. Other exhibits I have participated in include The 33 Collective Gallery and the Lincoln Square Art Guild. My ceramic work was chosen for the Illinois artisan program and exhibited in two show rooms. Additional exhibits have been at the Greenleaf Art Center, and the North Lakeside Cultural Center. Recently I have displayed my work at the Edgefest and the Fall Edgewater Art Fair. Because of my work in community preservation I have received the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Preservation Medal. I have also been awarded the Andersonville Volunteer of the Year Award and the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education Community Service Award. |
Kevin Flynn - President
Kevin Flynn was born less than 5 miles from the 1070 Gallery and has been nearby ever since. A product of Chicago Public Elementary School and Chicago Private High School, he has been immersed in what is Chicago from day one. His art reflects that with a vast majority of it focused on iconic Chicago scenes, both old and new. That's what he loves so much about his city, it is an ever changing tapestry of great designers trying to push envelopes and make their mark on architectural and urban landscapes.
Kevin spent 22 years at the Chicago Board of Trade, starting as a runner, and moving up to an independent trader in the Dow Jones Industrial and 30 Year U.S. Treasury Bond pits, as well as a trader and Co-Chairman of the German Bund Futures pit. After leaving the CBOT, Kevin returned to school to finish his undergrad and get a BA in Elementary Education from which he is still a certified K-9 IL teacher, and then an MBA in Marketing. He then went on to volunteer full time on the Obama 2008 campaign at the national HQ in Chicago, managing 20 state blogs, the daily news for the national blog, and a myriad of social media activities. He went on to do some speaking engagements and interviews for inclusion in magazine and book stories on the campaign. From there Kevin moved on to the next chapter in his life and his first corporate job at Motorola. From creating and managing a corporate blog that had 100,000s of views, to building out, validating and publishing hundreds of product launches globally, Kevin has had to work with agencies creating assets for the site, to partners at Google, Facebook and other large corporations to make sure projects went from white board to live on the internet. Besides product launches, Kevin facilitated Super Bowl activities by building a social hub for videos and tweets back in 2011 that was featured on Mashable's Super Bowl article on how social media was changing the game. He's always had a creative side, but never considered himself or attempted to be an artist until 2012. Moving into the Edgewater neighborhood down the street from the gallery, Kevin began his photography journey. Printing out a few pieces to have something on his walls. Friends commenting that it was cool. Printing more, going to places to be shown. His love for the Chicago and its' beautiful cityscapes propelled him to do more and more work and get into more and more locations and shows over the years. He is very excited to be an artist and to be part of such an exciting community of artists and in a neighborhood that is becoming more and more "artsy" all the time. |

About twelve years ago she retired from that field and began painting as a solo career, mainly focusing on portraiture and realism.
